First Aid Course – The Level 2 International Award in First Aid at Work and Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator equips candidates with the essential knowledge, skills, and confidence to deliver effective first aid and use a defibrillator in workplace emergencies

Learners achieving this qualification will understand essential emergency first aid procedures and gain the skills to use a defibrillator correctly. The course content promotes safe, prompt, and effective first aid practices for individuals and much more

First Aid Course – Learning Outcomes

1. Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider

  • Explain the role and responsibilities of a first aider

  • Identify ways to minimize infection risk to self and others

  • List the recommended contents of a first aid kit

2. Know how to assess an incident

  • Conduct a scene survey

  • Carry out a primary survey of a casualty

  • Call for appropriate help to support a casualty

  • Perform a head-to-toe survey

3. Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally

  • Assess a casualty’s level of consciousness

  • Open the airway and check breathing

  • Place an unresponsive casualty in the recovery position

  • Manage a casualty experiencing a seizure

4. Know how to manage a casualty who is not breathing normally and unresponsive

  • Recognize when cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is required

  • Demonstrate CPR using a manikin

5. Know how to recognize and assist a casualty who is choking

  • Identify signs of a partially or completely blocked airway

  • Demonstrate first aid for both partial and complete airway obstruction

6. Know how to recognize and assist a casualty with a minor injury

  • Identify types of external bleeding

  • Demonstrate first aid to control external bleeding

  • Demonstrate treatment for small cuts, grazes, and bruises

7. Know how to manage a casualty who is in shock

  • Recognize typical signs and symptoms of shock

  • Demonstrate first aid for a casualty suffering from shock

8. Know how to administer first aid to a casualty with injuries to bones, muscles, and joints

  • Recognize suspected fractures, dislocations, sprains, and strains

  • Demonstrate appropriate first aid for these injuries

9. Know how to administer first aid to a casualty with suspected head and spinal injuries

  • Recognize signs of concussion, skull fracture, cerebral compression, and spinal injury

  • Demonstrate first aid for these conditions

10. Know how to administer first aid to a casualty with suspected chest injuries

  • Recognize types of chest injuries

  • Administer first aid for chest injuries

11. Know how to administer first aid to a casualty with burns and scalds

  • Identify factors affecting the severity of burns and scalds

  • Demonstrate first aid for burns caused by heat, chemicals, electricity, and scalds

12. Know how to administer first aid to a casualty with an eye injury

  • Identify common eye injuries

  • Provide first aid for eye injuries caused by dust, chemicals, and embedded objects

13. Know how to administer first aid to a casualty with sudden poisoning

  • Identify routes by which poisons enter the body

  • Provide immediate first aid for sudden poisoning

  • Identify key sources of information for poison treatment

14. Know how to administer first aid to a casualty with anaphylaxis

  • Identify common triggers of anaphylaxis

  • Recognize signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis

  • Administer immediate first aid for a casualty suffering anaphylaxis

15. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected major illness

  • Recognize signs and symptoms of heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, and diabetes

  • Demonstrate first aid treatment for each of these conditions

16. Know how to safely use an automated external defibrillator (AED)

  • Explain the differences between using an AED on adults and children

  • Identify safety considerations when using an AED

  • Demonstrate correct placement of AED electrode pads on a manikin

  • Follow AED voice prompts accurately

  • Combine AED use with minimal interruption in CPR

  • Demonstrate safe delivery of an AED shock

  • State procedures if the casualty starts breathing normally

  • Identify information required when handing over a casualty

The qualification is assessed using the HABC assessment pack and is divided into two sections:

Part One: Assessed through practical demonstrations of first aid skills.

Part Two: A knowledge-based assessment where learners provide short written or oral responses to set questions.
